Reciprocity in fundraising: the gift before the ask
The situation
The appeal is well written, the cause is compelling, and response rates keep drifting down. The letter is asking before it has given.
Why it works
A small, genuine gift enclosed before any request measurably lifts response, because it converts a request into a return. What matters is that it arrives first and is not contingent on giving — a gift offered as a reward for donating is a transaction, and transactions do not trigger the rule.
What to do
Lead with something of real use to the recipient rather than something branded: a short guide, a piece of research they would have paid for, a genuinely useful tool. Send it with no ask attached, and ask separately.
Guilt-freighted trinkets, or making the gift conditional. Both are read accurately as pressure, and donors who feel manoeuvred do not lapse quietly — they tell people.
Reciprocity is one of seven principles identified across four decades of peer-reviewed research. Read all seven, or see how they apply to nonprofits.
