Authority for leaders: credentials open the door, candour keeps it open

The situation

You have the title and the track record, and the room still defers politely without actually committing. Position secured attention; it did not secure belief.

Why it works

Authority persuades when it signals both expertise and trustworthiness. Expertise alone reads as a sales pitch. The fastest route to the second half is a genuine, well-timed admission of a weakness — which is why conceding a real limitation early tends to strengthen rather than weaken a case.

What to do

Name the strongest objection to your own proposal before anyone else does, then answer it. You lose nothing that would not have surfaced anyway, and you gain the credibility of being the person who said it first.

Where it goes wrong

Borrowed or inflated authority — an impressive advisor who has never engaged, a credential stretched past what it covers. It works exactly until someone checks.

Authority is one of seven principles identified across four decades of peer-reviewed research. Read all seven, or see how they apply to executives.
